Recap of Pre-Op Appointment

Bryson had his pre-op appointment yesterday after getting to hang with his buds from Virginia in the morning. Our visit extended to Shriners where Karen's three boys had appointments at the same time as us.

There was some really good news and then some hopeful optimistic thinking news! Just trusting God who does have it all under control.

1. Bryson's custom wheelchair will not be able to modified for his petrie cast so they are loaning us one and they will store his wheelchair at Shriners until we return. YEAH! (I had been worried about how on earth I would manage two wheelchairs, rental car, luggage and Bryson in his condition at the airport).

2. They will try to do an epidural for 48 hours post op, but kids with arthrogryposis can be difficult to put epidurals in so if they can't get one in they will insert lines that feed pain medicine directly to his bones. They also will be giving him valium which should help. We have always had a difficult time managing  Bryson's pain after surgery so this plan sounds better than anything he has had in the past.

3. They are not going to to the foot tendon release now, as the tendon is not as tight as it was six months ago. They can always release it when he comes back in 18 months to have his hardware removed from his legs.

4. However, they are now doing the same femural soft tissue release on the right now on the left too as he feels his left side is too contracted as well. Along with the femurs and tibia being relocated.

Now onto the part that I am just giving my worry over and going with what may come!

5. The nurse said we were very optimistic to think we could get Bryson on a plane next Wednesday.  Anyhow, my thoughts are we will see what happens and if it is best for me to stay here with Bryson to recover longer than so be it. My friend Lorna can fly home and when he is well enough I will fly home with him with both of us taking valium!!! :-)

My optimistic adventure loving friend who mind you is a nurse (used to be peds nurse until recently), says she believes we can do it together. He will have to be in some sort of sitting position for landing and take off and then from there we can sprawl him across us with pillows. (I say she gets the cast end!) Give him lots of comfort meds and get him home where he can recover in his own home with family.  I told Lorna I know it will be miserable for all three of us, but misery enjoys company and when she gets home she will be so happy she is home!!! Mission accomplished!!!

Prayerful for the next 48 hours that Bryson continues to stay well as well as Lorna, myself and his doctor.
